Rosslyn Green and Close Residents Association concerned over Karura Forest Changes

Rosslyn Green and Close Residents Association stand with the many expressing deep concern at the seeming removal of Friends of Karura Forest from their long-standing role as custodians of Karura. For years, this voluntary organisation has safeguarded every aspect of the forest — its environment, wildlife, security, planning, administration/finance — ensuring Karura became the national treasure it is today.

Karura Forest is a vital green lung for Nairobi, protecting biodiversity, water catchments, and offering a safe space for recreation and community wellbeing. Its continued protection must remain free from external pressures and guided only by the best interests of conservation, the public good and the continued involvement of the local community. Severing this relationship will leave people without the income provided in return for their services to the forest.

We therefore call for transparency, accountability, and the highest possible standards of stewardship in decisions about Karura Forest. We believe those who have voluntarily protected it should be recognised and included in any future arrangements. It is of vital importance the same level of protection and care be maintained.
